How to choose a caffeine pouch|six things to check on the label

Published / 4 min read

Six points to compare when choosing a caffeine pouch — serving size, category (food or medicine), daily guideline, what else is in it, price per serving, and the ingredient list. Plus how to avoid confusing it with similar-looking products.

There are still relatively few caffeine pouches on the market, which makes it hard to know what to compare.

They all look similar: small pouches in a can, held in the mouth, removed afterwards. The differences are in the contents and on the label.

Here are six things worth checking.

1. Caffeine per pouch

The first number to look for. If a serving amount is not stated, you cannot count what you are taking.

Products currently available range from roughly 150mg to 200mg per pouch. For reference, a 150ml cup of brewed coffee is around 90mg.

Bigger is not better. Caffeine is counted as a daily total, so choose the size that fits alongside everything else you take that day.

There is more on this in 150mg or 200mg.

2. Category — food or medicine

The same substance is sold under two different categories.

ExampleLabelling
FoodCaffeine pouches, energy drinksFood labelling
MedicineAnti-drowsiness tabletsClassification, approved indications, dosage

A medicine carries indications and a dosage that have been reviewed and approved. A food does not. They are not chosen on the same grounds.

See caffeine pouch vs caffeine tablets for the detail.

3. Whether a daily guideline is printed

Choose a product that states how many to use per day.

If it does not, you are calculating from the serving size yourself. The guideline for a healthy adult is up to 400mg a day, with up to 200mg in a single serving (European Food Safety Authority).

Whether the pack carries notes for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine, also tells you how carefully the product was put together.

4. What else is in it

Some products contain caffeine alone; others combine it with something else.

The most common addition is L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea — in the same leaves as caffeine. There is more in what is L-theanine.

Sugar is also worth checking. Many products contain none, but not all.

5. Price per serving

The price on the can is not comparable on its own. Divide the price by the number of pouches.

CalculationPer serving
¥1,600 / 201600 ÷ 20¥80
¥2,000 / 202000 ÷ 20¥100
¥1,800 / 151800 ÷ 15¥120

Counts differ between cans, so comparing can prices alone reverses the order.

6. The ingredient list — do not judge by the name

Similar-looking pouches can contain entirely different things.

ContainsClassification
Caffeine pouchCaffeine and other ingredientsFood
Nicotine pouchNicotine (no tobacco leaf)Tobacco-related product
SnusTobacco leaf and nicotineTobacco product

In Japan the term "refresh pouch" has also started to appear. It does not describe the contents. The name alone will not tell you what is inside.

Why the three are treated differently in law is covered in snus, nicotine pouches and caffeine pouches.

Read the ingredient list, not the name.

In order

  1. Is the caffeine per pouch stated?
  2. Is it a food or a medicine?
  3. Is a daily guideline and are cautions printed?
  4. What else is in it?
  5. Have you divided price by count?
  6. Have you read the ingredient list?

If 1 to 3 are missing, you cannot manage how much you are taking. That is a reasonable place to draw the line.

Frequently asked questions

Which serving size should I start with?

Sensitivity to caffeine varies between people. Choose so that the day's total, including everything else, stays within the guideline. If you are unsure, speak to a doctor.

Does "nicotine free" mean it is a food?

Not necessarily. A pouch can be free of nicotine and still be a tobacco product if it uses tobacco leaf. Check whether it is labelled as a food.

Is choosing by flavour reasonable?

Yes — flavour affects whether you keep using it. Note that how long the flavour lasts varies between products; check the pack if it is stated.

Where can I see the labelling when buying online?

Check whether the product page shows the ingredient list and the daily guideline. If it does not, you can ask the seller before buying.

Where can I buy caffeine pouches?

Mail order, mostly. See where to buy caffeine pouches.
