"Where can I actually buy one" is the question that follows once you have read about the format.
The short answer: they are barely on the shelves of Japanese convenience stores or drugstores. Buying is mostly online.

Domestic mail order
The most practical route at present — either the seller's own site or a marketplace.
Three things to look at before buying:
- The ingredient list — what is in it and how much
- The category — is it sold as a food
- The legally required seller information — name, contact details, return conditions
The third is the basic check for any online purchase in Japan. If it is not there, it is safer not to buy.
Personal import from overseas
Caffeine pouches are more established in northern Europe, and overseas shops will ship. A few things follow from that:
- There is no Japanese labelling. You read the contents yourself
- Similar-looking products sit on the same shelf. Nicotine pouches and snus differ in both contents and legal status (the differences)
- Personal imports are subject to limits on quantity and category. Check the customs guidance for what applies
Read the ingredient list, not the product name.
Crowdfunding
Pre-launch purchase. The platform's terms apply, and shipping timing is stated on the campaign page rather than following normal retail terms.
Will they reach the shelves?
Not yet. There are few products in Japan and the category is still becoming known.
In northern Europe, "a pouch you hold in your mouth" is an established product category. Distribution in Japan is at an earlier stage.
Four things to check, whichever route
- Caffeine per pouch — without it, you cannot count what you take
- The daily guideline — how many per day
- Whether it is labelled as a food — some caffeine products are sold as medicines
- Cautions — notes for people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine

Are they in convenience stores?
Not as a standard line at present. Buying is mostly online.
Do drugstores stock them?
Some might, but they are not widely carried. Note that the anti-drowsiness tablets often shelved nearby are medicines, which is a different category.
Is there an age restriction?
Japan places no legal age-verification requirement on foods containing caffeine. That said, sensitivity varies and the effect relative to body weight is greater for children. Keep it out of reach of children.
Is there a difference between imported and domestic products?
Mainly the labelling. Products for the Japanese market carry ingredients and cautions in Japanese. With imports you read them yourself, and there is more room to confuse a product with a similar-looking one from another category.
Can I buy in bulk?
That depends on the seller. Note that caffeine is counted as a daily total — having more on hand does not change the daily guideline.
