Both are reached for in similar moments, but a caffeine pouch and an energy drink are different in three concrete ways: the amount, what else is in it, and what is left afterwards.

Ne9 is a food product — confectionery powder sealed in non-woven fabric, holding 150mg of caffeine per pouch. An energy drink is a beverage, and what it contains varies a great deal between products.

Reading the caffeine amount

This is the part that catches people out. Many energy drinks state caffeine per 100ml rather than per container.

A 355ml can labelled "32mg per 100ml" contains about 114mg in total. The number on the label and the number you actually take are not the same, and the arithmetic is left to you.

A pouch is portioned: one pouch is one amount. Ne9 prints it on the lid of the can, so it is readable when buying and when using.

Sugar and volume

An energy drink is a drink, so there is liquid to get through and, in many products, sugar. Sugar-free versions exist, so this is a per-product question rather than a category one — but it is worth checking the label.

Ne9 contains no sugar. The sweetness in the Tropical flavour comes from the scent only.

What is left afterwards

An energy drink leaves an empty can. A pouch leaves the used pouch itself.

Neither disappears. The difference is whether you can deal with it where you are. Some cans, Ne9 included, have a compartment in the lid for temporary storage until you can dispose of it properly.

In a meeting or in a car, "can I finish and throw this away here" is often the deciding factor.

Using both on the same day

Caffeine is counted as a daily total. The guideline for a healthy adult is around 400mg per day, with a further guideline of up to 200mg in a single serving (European Food Safety Authority).

If you have an energy drink and a caffeine pouch on the same day, add both together — along with coffee, tea and anything else.

If you do, add up the caffeine from both. People sensitive to caffeine, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and children should not use Ne9.

Is a caffeine pouch a replacement for an energy drink?
