The big difference between a caffeine pouch and coffee is simple: one is a drink, the other is a single-serve pouch you hold in your mouth.
Ne9 is a food product — confectionery powder sealed in non-woven fabric. One pouch contains 150mg of caffeine, and no drink needs to be prepared. Coffee varies in caffeine content depending on the beans and the brewing method, and it is consumed as a drink, aroma and temperature included.
Neither is better. What matters is the situation you are in, and the total caffeine you take from everything else that day.
Side by side
| Caffeine pouch | Coffee | |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Powder in a non-woven pouch | Brewed liquid |
| Caffeine per serving | Printed on the pack (Ne9: 150mg) | Varies with beans and brewing (about 90mg per 150ml) |
| Water or equipment | Not needed | Needed |
| After use | Remove from the mouth and dispose of it | Wash or discard the cup |
| Easy to handle when | In a meeting, before or after travelling, mid-task | When you have a seat and time |
| Sugar | Depends on the product (often none) | None if black |
Where the amount comes from
Coffee is not a fixed dose. The Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan give roughly 60mg per 100ml for brewed coffee, so a 150ml cup is around 90mg. In practice it moves with the beans, the roast, the grind and the brewing method.
A pouch is portioned. One pouch is one amount, printed on the pack. This does not make it better — it makes it countable. If you are keeping track of a daily total, that difference matters.
Ne9 prints the amount on the lid of the can, so it is readable both when buying and when using.
Where each one fits
Coffee needs a seat, both hands for a moment, and time for it to cool. That is not a flaw — it is what a drink is. But there are situations where those requirements do not fit:
- A meeting you cannot step out of
- Travel, where handling a drink is awkward
- Work where your hands are already occupied
A pouch was not made because drinks are insufficient. It exists because there was no form you could use on the spot.
Taste
Coffee is chosen for its aroma and flavour as much as anything else. A pouch is not a substitute for that. Ne9 comes in Spear Mint, Tropical and Creamy Coffee — the blend is identical across all three, and only the scent differs.
If what you want is a cup of coffee, a pouch does not replace it.
Frequently asked questions
How many cups of coffee is one Ne9 pouch?
There is no single conversion. Using the food composition tables' figure of about 60mg per 100ml, 150mg works out to roughly 250ml — but real coffee varies with the product, the beans, the brewing method and the serving size.
Can a caffeine pouch replace coffee?
Not as a like-for-like substitute — the form and the way it is used are different. It is an option that does not require a drink. It is not a medicine, and it is not intended to treat drowsiness or prevent any illness.
Can I have coffee and a caffeine pouch on the same day?
If you do, add up every source of caffeine. People sensitive to caffeine, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and children should not use Ne9.
Is there a coffee-flavoured caffeine pouch?
Ne9 includes a Creamy Coffee flavour. The blend is the same as the other flavours; only the scent differs.
Which is cheaper per serving?
Ne9 is planned at ¥1,600 for a can of 20, which is about ¥80 per pouch. Coffee depends entirely on where you buy it.
